VALLARPADAM, the Lovely Island
Vallarpadam is one of the two main islands of Kochi, the other being Willingdon Island. It is situated next to Bolgatty Island on the West and linked to the mainland by the Goshree Bridges. It is about 3.5 km in length in the north south direction and hosts a population of 10 K people. It is about one km away from the mainland.
Vallarpadam and the proximate island New Vypin hold tremendous development potential. because of its nearness to the international east west trade route between Asia and Europe. It is situated in the 200 km long Vembanad Lake, known as the Lake of Kochi.
Vallarpadam is connected via Rail with the Edappally Railway Station, with a 4620 m long Rail Bridge. This rail connectivity is for transporting containers from the ICTT.
The total cost of the ICTT project is 6250 crores the ICTT will be able to handle 4 Million TEUs. Most of Indian cargo - almost 70% - was handled by Dubai, Singapore and Colombo Ports. Vallarpadam, along with Vizhinjam will be a boon to Indian transporters. Per container the gain will be 14 days and 700 dollars !
This Terminal will be a watershed in the economic growth of Kerala. It can change her entire economic scenario, as she brings in a lot of opportunities and income.
The Kochi Port is an all weather port and is not affected by the vagaries of the monsoon. Vallarpadam is 24*7 Port, as the tidal variations are insignificant. This is a great advantage to the vessel operators as they will be able to work their berthing windows without fail. With the employment of the new generation cranes, ICTT will compare with the best in the world, in terms of productivity. With a draft of 14.5 metres, Vallarpadam can handle the best container vessels afloat !
